🚽 A New Kind of Health Tracker — in Your Toilet
It was only a matter of time before health tracking reached the bathroom. After all, if smart litter boxes can monitor a cat’s wellbeing, why shouldn’t humans have something similar?
US kitchen and bathroom giant Kohler has unveiled a bold new device under its wellness brand Kohler Health — the Dekoda Smart Toilet Camera. The idea: bring daily health insights to the most private space in the home.
🔍 How the Dekoda Works
Retailing at around £495, the Dekoda clips discreetly onto the side of a toilet bowl — much like a cleaning block — and uses an optical sensor to analyse waste. The system scans for signs of blood, assesses gut health and hydration levels, and sends the data directly to a connected smartphone app.
Over time, users can view daily readings, track long-term health trends, and get personalised wellness insights.
To ensure the readings are unique to each person, the device includes a fingerprint sensor that recognises individual users. It’s powered by a removable rechargeable battery, supports USB charging, and connects via Bluetooth to the app.
💷 Pricing, Subscription and Privacy
The Dekoda will cost about £495 upfront, with an additional £58 to £130 per year for subscription access to its analysis platform. Pre-orders are now open, with shipping scheduled from 21 October.
Kohler is aware of privacy concerns around putting a camera near such a personal area. The company says Dekoda uses “privacy-first optical design”, meaning the sensor only captures what’s inside the toilet bowl — never the user.
All captured data is encrypted and tied to the user’s fingerprint ID, ensuring no cross-user data leaks or unauthorised access.
However, the firm admits that Dekoda may struggle with darker toilet bowls, and has hinted that a future version could include built-in lighting or even odour sensors for enhanced diagnostics.
🌍 The Rise of Bathroom Health Tech
Kohler isn’t alone in this emerging market. US startup Throne has launched a similar health-monitoring toilet system, highlighting a growing trend towards smart bathroom diagnostics.
What once seemed like a futuristic idea is quickly becoming reality — with the toilet now joining the smartwatch and fitness band as part of your personal health toolkit.
